![]() Summary: In this cinematic action-thriller, troubled author Alan Wake embarks on a desperate search for his missing wife, Alice. However, the sound quality of the game is not at par with the other aspects of the game and certainly needs refurbishment in areas of volume modulations. On the aspect of look and feel of the game, the graphics and animation are well suited to the brilliant storyline. On the aspect of ease of understanding and play, this version is an improvement over the previous one and can be easily grasped and seamlessly played, both by curious newcomers and the seasoned gamers. ![]() In my view, this game deserves a mixed verdict. A little more effort in improving the audio quality could have given the overall game a surreal experience. In addition to that, the Foley effects in the cutscenes were not in sync with the video at a few scenes. The dialogues seemed to echo in the in-game cutscenes. Due to this, the volume levels demanded constant manual adjustment, which deviated the focus from the game to reconfiguring the volume levels continuously. In my opinion, there were quite a few audio fluctuations throughout the entire game as the sound quality felt suppressed ( I got the feeling of listening to a radio on low frequency) and at times, it was blaring ( I am now deaf!). I was disappointed with the audio quality of the game. Nonetheless, this version is definitely an upgrade in terms of graphics as compared to the previous title. As nothing is perfect, there seem to be a couple of minor graphical glitches that I came across while playing the game. A lot of attention to detail is given in creating the game environment and assets. Even so, the game is quite engaging and will not let you turn your heads away from the screen even for a second! GraphicsĪlan Wake Remastered offers the complete experience in stunning new 4K visuals. The unconventional placement of the camera angle rather than the player being in the centre of the frame was a bit uncomfortable. You are encouraged to use the entire arsenal of supplies at your disposal to defeat the forces of darkness. The overall gameplay includes dodging around axe-wielding lunatics, shining a torch in the face of the forces of darkness to destroy their protective cloak of shadows and then shooting them with your pistol ( Pew-Pew Bang-Bang!!!). Just remember that while Alan Wake will run out of energy, the forces of darkness will not, so you will need a strong survival strategy if you aren’t near an overhead light source. Its sometimes best to face them, and other times its best to flee. ![]() On the increasing difficulty level, it is easier to find yourself entirely engulfed by them. Throughout the game, you will need to stay on your toes because the forces of darkness can strike you from any direction. In terms of fighting and what amounts to puzzles, the game is quite simple! You are always informed where to go and what to do, often with the narrator’s assistance. His terrifying journey to discover the answers to the perplexing mystery he faces will take him deep into the night. Alan witnesses a physical manifestation of darkness represented by the people of Bright Falls and has no choice but to weaken the forces of darkness with his flashlight and finish them off with a handgun and other weapons that he picks up along his journey. While several parables run throughout Alan Wake, on the surface, this is a very simple story about light versus dark. To make matters worse, the story comes true before his eyes, page by page, and Wake is compelled to question his sanity. Worried, Alan embarks on a desperate search for Alice whilst trying to comprehend why passages from a horror story he has supposedly written, but has no memory of, keep showing up on his journey. However, things quickly take an unexpected turn when Alice vanishes from the cabin they have rented and the immediate next moment Alan finds himself in his car, bleeding and in the middle of the woods. Alice, Alan’s beloved wife, takes him to the Pacific Northwest town of Bright Falls for a little R&R. Alan Wake Remastered Review Story and GameplayĪlan Wake Remastered, a cinematic action-thriller, features a best-selling writer stricken by a bout of writer’s block. I have, in all fairness, played this version of the game so as to objectively assess its various aspects. I was pleasantly surprised and welcomed the opportunity of playing Alan Wake Remastered and to say the least, it surpassed my expectations on various counts. While it comes with a larger price tag, its quality and durability make it a solid investment. With its beautiful anodized aluminum finish and steady ride, the Rocket gets an A+ grade for style and performance. The Micro Rocket is a wicked little scooter than allows less aggressive kids, tweens, and teens to confidently ride a kick scooter without the stress of losing control and falling over constantly on their mind. The Rocket is a bit more bulky than the Sprite, so if you’re going to be carrying it any significant distance, we recommend purchasing one of Micro’s carrying straps. Rocket Folds for Easy Carrying and Storage And while our kids just generally toss their scooters all over the sidewalk, it is nice to have the option of upright storage in the garage. If you kick it forward, it’s easier to grab it with your toe to pull it down for parking. Kickstand: The two-way kickstand can be kicked up forward or backwards to keep it out of the way while riding. Ease of Assembly, Transport, and StorageĪssembly: The Rocket comes completely assembled! I hate assembling things, so that’s a win in my book. The Rocket’s standard scooter brake is upgraded with a texturized rubber for better grip and less slippage. The stem of the Sprite is a classy, smooth anodized aluminum that comes in 2 different colors – black and sky blue. The rubber bumpers will hold up better than traditional foam after being dropped or laid on the sidewalk. We especially love that the ends have upgraded soft rubber bumpers because despite the fact that the Rocket has a kickstand, the number of times your kids will just throw the scooter on the ground will probably far exceed the numbers of times they’ll actually use the kickstand. The handlebars are a standard t-bar with soft foam hand grips. In addition to its high-quality functionality, the deck’s anodized aluminum colored finish matches the scooter’s stem, completing the Rocket’s polished look. With 13.5″ of usable foot space (a full inch longer than our Razor A5), 4.75″ at its widest point (the Micro Sprite is 4″ wide), and a non-grip overlay that covers more surface area than other kick scooters, the Rocket’s foot deck adds to the comfort, ease, and stability this scooter is designed for. The Rocket’s foot deck is roomy without being bulky. ![]() These fat wheels are the primary reason the Rocket is so stable, and also why it doesn’t reach the same high speeds as the Sprite. Made from a high-quality, bump-dampening polyurethane like the Sprite, the front and rear 120 mm wheels are 2 5/8″ wide – almost 3x the width of a standard kick scooter. ![]() The Rocket’s wheels are its truly distinguishing feature. Weight Capacity: 220 lb weight capacity – enough for a tall, grown man. It’s not meant for jumps and tricks, so the extra weight isn’t really an issue. Weight: At 9.5 lbs., the Rocket is heavier than your standard kick scooter (the Sprite is 6.4 lbs.), but is still lightweight enough and easy to maneuver for anyone 8+. If you’re a grown-up looking for a scooter for yourself, check out the Micro Flex or Micro Black. Micro does have scooters with taller handlebars that are specifically designed for adults. With an almost 12″ range from min to max ( they adjust from 23.25″ to 34.5″ from the deck) the Rocket was a great fit and enjoyable ride for both our kid, teen, and adult testers. Handlebar Height: The Rocket’s adjustable handlebars allow a wide range of ages and heights to ride. ![]() (ii) if you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, to download, install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software for use either: (a) by a single individual on each of the Mac Computer(s) that you own or control, or (b) by multiple individuals on a single shared Mac Computer that you own or control. Dark Mode on Applications is the best way to protect your eyes from the extra light which comes from a mobile phone at night, but some apps Google Hangouts do not have Dark mode in. Really, it’s surprising that our brains don’t misfire more often.” “And I think when we get deja vu, it’s our memory cortex just malfunctioning. We might occasionally see a flash of something that’s not there, as our visual cortex misfires, or hear a phantom sound thanks to a mistake by our auditory cortex, Berkovic says. Our little grey cells aren’t perfect, after all. Neurologist Professor Sam Berkovic says you can think of deja vu as a “glitch” – but in our own brains. In the sci-fi thriller The Matrix, our hero Neo is told that deja vu is really a glitch in the artificial reality they are locked in (when the sudden reappearance of a black cat, now known to the internet as deja vu cat, signals coming danger.) ![]() After we realise we haven’t, the feeling generally starts to fade (unless you’re Bill Murray’s character in Groundhog Day, who at first mistakes the time loop he’s stuck in for deja vu.)Īt least two-thirds of people are estimated to get deja vu at some point. We might stop on a street corner, trying to remember when we’ve been there before. “That’s why it feels so weird.”Īnd of course, for most of us, deja vu is fleeting, however strong in the moment. “But when we get deja vu normally, we know something’s wrong,” says Moulin. AKP had persistent deja vecu (already lived). As well as “already seen”, there’s deja entendu (already heard), deja senti (already felt) and deja reve (already dreamed). ![]() The French actually have many names for deja vu. He acted on it, justified it with false memories.” “But we wouldn’t describe it as deja vu anymore because for them the feeling of familiarity is so intense they can’t overcome it. “I’ve worked with about 13 or 14 people like that,” says Moulin, who admits he “sort of became a deja vu researcher because there wasn’t a deja vu researcher” while trying to treat them. I t turned out, there were other cases like him – all older people (“so, late onset”), generally with some form of dementia or memory issue but otherwise very functional and engaged, as was AKP. This got pretty frustrating for his wife.” In fact, when he was first referred to the memory clinic where Moulin worked, AKP insisted he’d already been. “He’d invent far-fetched stories for how, he got to the newsagent that morning just as the papers were being unloaded. “He wouldn’t even read the newspaper because he said he’d already read it,” says Moulin. In fact, the man was convinced he was living his life over. Everything felt familiar to this 80 year old – every song, every TV show, snippets of conversation, strangers in the street. Moulin, now a memory researcher at the Universite Grenoble Alpes in France, first became interested in deja vu two decades ago when a woman came to him about a strange case: her husband, known as AKP, had what she called “permanent deja vu”. So, what is going on when deja vu hits? Is it a glitch in our heads – or the Matrix? And how are scientists using hypnosis, puzzles and The Sims video game to find out?Ĭredit: Artwork Aresna Villaneuva What is deja vu? But what he experienced isn’t uncommon, he says, a kind of faux prescience that extends the jolt of classic deja vu into something truly spooky. Thankfully, Moulin was not actually having a premonition that day and the plane kept on flying. It evolved into this sense of dread – because I also felt I knew what was coming and what was coming was the plane was about to nosedive.” Moulin recalls a particularly powerful wave of deja vu hitting while on a plane leaving Canada. Some people even become convinced they can predict what’s about to happen next, as if they are replaying a moment in time. In French it means, “already seen.” But the feeling of familiarity where there should be none can arrive with sound, taste, smell and more. ![]() Today, the neuropsychologist is a world expert on the strange phenomenon of deja vu. “It couldn’t be right but it was so strong,” he says. ![]() See all 10 stories.Ĭhris Moulin was visiting New York for the first time when he turned down a street and was suddenly struck by an impossible feeling: he’d been there before. Incidentally, the name Twin Galaxies is derived from the name of his own arcade. Walter Day, however, knew a young player in his arcade who had beaten that record by far.Īfter consulting with machine manufacturer Williams and game developer Namco, he learned that there was no national leaderboard for Defender or any other video game - the initial spark for the creation of his service. The background was a story in Time magazine in 1982 about how 15-year-old Steve Juraszek set a record in Defender. The arcade operator Walter Day from Ottumwa in the state of Iowa founded the first referee service for video games on 09 February 1982 with the "Twin Galaxies National Scoreboard". The next steps in the direction of eSports again came from the USA. The circle of people playing the early games was still limited to universities and similar institutions, since they had the technical facilities. But on October 19, 1972, the time had finally come: the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Stanford University hosted the world's first eSports tournament, the "Intergalactic Spacewar Olympics." Twenty-four players met on this day to compete in "Spacewar! Incidentally, the winner at the time received a year's subscription to "Rolling Stones" magazine. It is considered the world's first digital computer game and was named one of the ten most important computer games of all time by the New York Times in 2007. Interestingly, the spaceships already had a limited supply of fuel and ammunition and had to fight against the gravitational field of a planet. In it, two players play against each other with one spaceship each. The space game "Spacewar!" had already been written in 1962 on a PDP-10 computer by computer scientist Steve Russel and some colleagues like Martin Graetz and Wayne Wiitanen of the "Tech Model Railroad Club" at MIT. It would be a few years before the first eSports-like tournament would exist. ![]() In the event that you work with confidential information and it is embodied in a document and you want it not to be seen, you can opt for the function to hide the text, and this can be achieved by making use of the formatting marks.
